The Kh-29L air-to-surface missile is designed to engage visually observed hardened ground and surface targets, such as big railway and highway bridges, industrial installations, concrete runways, aircraft in reinforced concrete shelters, and surface vessels displacing up to 10,000 tons. The Kh-29L is equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system using a reflected laser illumination spot.

The missile makes part of weapon systems of multiple fighters and attack aircraft.The missile are suspended under the carrier aircraft, launched in combat and jettisoned in emergency by means of the AKU-58AE airborne ejection unit.
